This gritty series from David Simon has become one of cable network HBO's biggest success stories. Set in Baltimore, the plot revolves around a police investigation involving murder and drugs. Told from both the investigators' and the perpetrators' points of view, the series challenges viewers as it finds redeeming and not-so-redeeming qualities in each of its characters. Stars British actor Dominic West as detective Jimmy McNulty.
By far the best show on television; I can't recommend it enough. Most TV crime series aspire to John Grisham's level. The Wire aspires to Dostoevsky's.

I didn't like it (granted I only watched the first episode and the previews for the second and third episodes). It was too gangster for me.

Be prepared to sit through at least 4-5 episodes of walkthroughs and intros... The Wire didn't suck me in until everyone is introduced... Once everyone is introduced, the show picks up and im glued to the Play Next Episode button lol... This keeps it close to real as possible, with "Are you freakin kidding me??" and "Thats bull****" moments... If you like the "happy ending" TV shows, this isnt it... It keeps your stomach empty all the way to the end... And even then, you dont feel complete... Just like in real life... never closure, never happy endings, never any justice... Looking forward to Season 2...

I gotta admit..after about 3 Episodes I was not impressed at all. But then the 4th Episode kicked in and it all made sense. The Series picked up alot of steam after that and I was hooked. If you take a chance on this series, I ask that you give it a chance. Or you will miss out on a great series.

Save yourself some time and add the additional seasons to your queue now. This show is more addictive than the heroin the inner-city kids are slinging in the projects.

A police drama, which reminded me of the old show Hill Street Blues, only with much more violence and trash talking. It is a good show, I guess, for those who are interested in the drug trade and culture. Despite some interesting shots, I grew weary after the first disc since it just felt like more of the same world which doesn't interest me all that much. Not my kind of show.

Let me just go ahead and add my praise to this amazing series. The Wire is the best written and best acted show I have ever seen. While some people may find the lack of resolution disheartening, I was glued to this series from the start. There are so many iconic characters in this series that to single anyone out would be a disservice. I defy anyone to watch this entire season and not want to immediately get season 2. I hate that this show has come to an end and I am disgusted that this show has never won an emmy, but I am excited that I got to be a part of possibly the greatest television series of all time. Highly recommended.

This gritty and highly realistic cop show has an emphasis on drugs and surveillance. The realism is manifest in the unapologetic details and large cast of characters. You have to work to follow this show as it doesn't take you by the hand at all. Doing so however, provides a nice payoff as the serial story is quite strong. In fact, this show reminds me a great deal of the movie New Jack City. So if you're into that sort of thing, you should be on solid ground here. Great acting rounds out this HBO hit series.

ireviewnetflix.com review: * This show is horrible. I've really gotten into cop dramas and mystery shows like The Closer and Cold Case so I thought I would give this show a chance. Boy, was I disappointed. This is just a cop drama with a really bad story. I could barely make it through the boring as hell pilot. This show is too slow, the episodes aren't that great and the stories are boring as hell and there's too much going on. When there's a lot going on and it's still boring, that sucks. I just don't care about the characters, the story, or the show. After three really bad episodes I gave up. I'm mad I waited that long. I should have given up after the horrible pilot episode.

THE WIRE: SEASON 1 hooked me immediately and pulled me into the bleak, dangerous world of the Baltimore detectives. I'm five years behind the curve here and knew Dominic West only from his villainous turn in 300. It appears that all the "must-see" t.v. has been on cable the past few years. And now, of course, here.
