After Princess Diana's shocking death, Queen Elizabeth II (Helen Mirren, in an Oscar-winning role) and Tony Blair (Michael Sheen) engage in intimate talks as Britain demands the princess be memorialized in a manner beyond standard protocol. This Oscar-nominated drama for Best Picture goes behind the scenes as the queen and prime minister try to manage Diana's death on a personal level while also dealing with a public calling for royal treatment for their beloved princess.
The Queen is a quintessential movie. (At its end, I thought, "Now *that* was a movie!") Its performances are measured and outstanding, its story fascinating and snugly fit, its direction balanced and dead-on -- in a word, quintessential. Helen Mirren will take the Oscar. She is completely convincing as the sovereign embodiment of royal tradition yet also a human being with habits and emotions, just needing an adjustment to the Royals' perspective on Lady Diana. This movie is a captivating modern-day morality play that discerns the line between what is stiff-upper-lip prim and what is do-the-right-thing proper. All the supporting cast members turn in fine performances, esp. Michael Sheen as Tony Blair.

This was an interesting look into the monarchy of England, and I enjoyed most the view into how royalty lives. The royal grounds were quite magnificent! I do not know if the set was true to life, but I certainly got a sense of an opulant life with a peaceful nature all around. The drama between the queen and the prime minister was the real heart of this story, that in the end humanized the queen. I imagine that the film resonates more with those who loved the Princess Diane and/or were caught up in the actual event. Otherwise, the movie only showcases how power, if only for its own survival, sometimes has to bend to the will of the people, which I thought was a great message.

An interesting look into the life of Queen Elizabeth II right before and right after the death of Princess Diana. Helen Mirren won an Oscar for her portrayal of the Queen. A well made movie that integrated old footage into the movie pretty well. A rare look into the royal family. "If there is a photographer out there, he could be the first kill of the day."

Majestic and refined, The Queen is a supremely well done character study with top notch acting, especially by Helen Mirren. I just wish the slow, subtle and predictable story had been just as captivating. Boring at times but well done none-the-less.

This film really really REALLY surprised me. I honestly did not think that I would enjoy it as much as I did. The acting in this film is PHENOMENAL. I was blown away by Mirren's portrayal as Queen Elizabeth II. The fact that they used a lot of the original footage as well as made "like original" was very very very well done. The raw emotions of the people who lost their princess are so very well portrayed. This film also gives you a; what might have happened behind the scenes while the whole WORLD waited for a reaction from the Queen of England. This film is so very very wonderful. I think everyone should watch it, if anything to understand what a great loss England felt. I would recommend this film to anyone who loves a good drama.

ireviewnetflix.com rating: **** An incredible movie with an amazing cast. The death of Princess Diana impacted me because I grew up with a mother who was raised in London and loved the royal family, especially Diana. This unique look into the week of her death is captivating from beginning to end.
