The Pledge

On the trail of the escaped convict who brutally killed his wife and son, Sheriff Matt Austin (Luke Perry) finds the man working for a lowdown snake out to steal land from a widow and her son. Now, Austin must take on not only the man who killed his family, but also a ruthless land baron with powerful connections. C. Thomas Howell and Francesco Quinn (son of Anthony Quinn) co-star in this Old West tale of justice.

This is a low budget Western apparently made for TV. I wasn't expecting much so I wasn't disappointed. Unfortunately I wasn't surprised either. The plot was a generic land baron tries to steal the family ranch with the help of the corrupt sheriff type of story, completely predictable and unoriginal. The cast was really small, I suppose because of the low budget. The acting was not great but decent, and the one actress was pretty. There were no sweeping panoramas and the gunfights were not done very well. I could go on picking it apart but I won't because in spite of all it's flaws it really wasn't that bad. I guess it depends on what you compare it to. I've seen plenty of worse movies, and I actually liked this one, although I'm sure my lower expectations helped. Objectively it stinks, but subjectively I enjoyed it and I'm not sure why. I would recommend it only to those who are not too critical and like B Westerns.
