Based on Ricky Gervais's hit BBC sitcom, this American remake stars Steve Carell as Michael Scott, the deluded general manager of a boring suburban workplace. A biting satire that skewers office life with devious relish, "The Office" co-stars John Krasinski as the lustful Jim, Jenna Fischer as receptionist Pam, Rainn Wilson as know-it-all Dwight and B.J. Novak as temp Ryan.
While I've enjoyed the later seasons even more, the first season of the office is regularly laugh-out-loud funny. Unlike so many sitcoms, the entire cast is brilliant and work together to make the dreadful lives of paper salesmen come to life.

The first season of the American Office is every bit as good as its reputation. The first season is great, and borrows more heavily from the original version than the later seasons do. For this reason (possibly) it feels like the quick banter of the show is a little bit slower than it is in season two and three. But it is still great, the stories in the first season are often much better than later years and the character development is fairly minimal for a first season, allowing the actors to begin exploring their characters and becoming the great cast that has made the show a staple. This is situational comedy at its best.

Having never seen the British, Ricky Gervais version of this show, I really had no idea what to expect when this short 6 episode season originally landed on NBC. Not an immediate ratings getter it seemed American audiences were either continuing to resist non-laugh track situation comedy, felt this show couldn't live up to it's British original or thought the awkward humor was well... more awkward than funny. If anything I fell into that third group but like a train wreck I just kept watching and eventually I did see the funny. The characters seem equally realistic and absurd and Steve Carell is brilliant. At only 6 episodes, I didn't get tired of the awkward and was left wanting more by the time it was over.

THE OFFICE taps into the same collective subconscious as the movie OFFICE SPACE and the comic strip Dilbert. If you enjoy these, you'll enjoy this series. Steve Carell and Rainn Wilson brilliantly play unsympathetic characters, and Jenna Fischer is lovely in that accessible girl-next-door way. This is a good series.
