The Notebook

Based on a Nicholas Sparks novel, this drama chronicles an enduring love that withstands both war and disease. It begins in a nursing home, where a man (James Garner) arrives every day armed with a notebook from which he reads stories about a couple, Noah and Allie (played by Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams), to an unresponsive woman (Gena Rowlands). Who are the characters in the book, and why does the stranger insist on reading about them aloud?

James Garner and Gena Rowlands are residents in a nursing home. Rowlands is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, and each day Garner reads to her from a story in a notebook. The notebook story is set in the 1940s, and is about two young lovers played by Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. Gosling works in a lumber yard, and McAdams comes from a wealthy family. They meet the summer before McAdams goes off to college. McAdams’ family does not approve of the romance, and forces McAdams to leave. They meet again seven years later. McAdams has moved on and is about to get married, and Gosling has never got over his first love. The plot is nothing new. But it is extremely well done. The tie-ins to the notebook and the people in nursing home make the story special. Watch it with someone you love. It is a chick flick, but I admit it made me cry. You will be moved by this story.

It's an amazing movie. You can kind of tell what's going on and predict why certain things happen, but still, the story is amazing. It's definitely one of the better movies I have watched. It has its moments when you feel like bawling your eyes out, but overall I believe it's a great piece of work.

Funny, romantic...great movie. I even got my fiance to watch it with me and he said it wasn't bad! McAdams and Gosling are wonderful together.

Ok guys, this is a love-story, tear-jerking chick-flick to the end. It is also an incredibly good movie. I thought the acting from every person in this movie was impressive. You could feel the emotion throughout the film and yes, they did a darn good job of making you feel the pain of love. Most everyone will figure out 90% of the movie in the first 10 minutes but that doesn't matter, the emotion in the end is still real. Hands down one of the best love stories I have ever seen. Two lovers go through all the struggles to find one another and finally late in life, when they should be relaxing and enjoying having won one another, the battle continues in a most romantic way. Giving the story even more weight is that it will very likely happen if it hasn't already. And from the younger crowd. my 13 yr old daughter insisted we buy this movie after seeing it the first time and it has become an instant classic for her.

What's not to love? This is one of the best-crafted love stories I have seen. The writing and cinematography is exquisite; the story and characters are compelling; the acting and ending are sublime. What more can I say (without giving the ending away)? (Note: This is not a "chick flick" or a "date movie"; it's a "full-life movie" or a "true-love movie." This movie is not a dating strategy; it is a life strategy.) Yes, it can make grown men weepy, but in a good way. Anyone with a heart and soul will be moved by this film. It will make you believe in true love that lasts, no matter what. 5 stars.

I loved this Nicholas Sparks book - the story is beautiful and sad all at the same time - and the movie was every bit as wonderful. It's a flashback to the 40's about the love of a young couple from different socio-economic backgrounds. Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams were perfectly cast. There's an underlying twist throughout the storyline that is heartbreaking. According to the inside cover of the book, this is the story of Nicholas Sparks's wife's grandparents. It makes me tear up just to think about it. This is a touching story played out in the romantic south and if you enjoy a good love story, this one's for you!

A man visits a nursing home in order to read to one of the patients who is suffering from dementia. We figured this movie out in the first 5 minutes, but it still made us cry. 4 stars and a box of tissues.

I am really speechless for this one. I fell in love with the characters in this film, they were all well developed. I fell in love with the story, it was magnificent, breathtaking and amazing. I laughed, cried, felt my heart literally ache for these people and their situation, and then felt my heart soar for them, only to find it aching once again. It was definitely hands down, one of the best romances I have ever seen. A definite must see.

Cassavetes' The Notebook is all and all centered around an emotional mood. Where films plot rely on the technique of having a story within a story; this tearjerker does not fall short. Indeed, as the 2nd story-- described through "The Notebook"-- develops, we learn more about the characters of the underlying story, which engenders the former. It is true that to a large extent, the plot is very predictable; but, it is also true, that you will get what you expected. However, this film focuses too much on a closed audience- those who expect to enter depressed, and leave weeping- and it does a good job in satisfying such prospective viewers. There is not much of an escape from that element, as the movie continually pushes at trying to make the viewer emotional-- a technique very much unwelcomed, in my opinion. In short, if you wanted to see this movie, see it; if you don't think you're interested, you're probably right.
