The Guardian

Appointed to teach at an elite Coast Guard school, legendary rescue swimmer Ben Randall (Kevin Costner) is compelled to skillfully train and inspire cocky upstart Jake Fischer (Ashton Kutcher). So many "average" reviews... It is difficult to judge a movie solely based on the movie alone, but it is necessary. There is very little out there that doesn't have some elements of other moives in it. However, this movie can stand by itself as a truly entertaining movie. "Men of Honor", "Message in a Bottle", and any other movie that has two strong-willed characters trying to cope with the roadblocks that life puts in their path fall into this category. Costner and Kutcher do a very good job with their roles. The movie moves well and I promise you, you will enjoy this movie. It is well worth a watch.

Nice movie! I happen to like Kevin Costner and I’m also a fan of rising star Ashton Kutcher so I knew I wouldn’t have a problem with the acting. My fear was it would be too serious/emotional ala Ladder 49. It wasn’t. In fact, this movie owes it’s spirit to Top Gun and Officer and a Gentlemen. It’s a serious movie. Sometimes it is very serious but it never crosses the line into melodrama. The characters are completely believable and there are times the movie gets light-hearted enough to keep the viewer interested. The action and big budget FX are also very well done even if they don’t dominate the movie. If I have to find fault with the flick it’s that it’s really long. I hesitate to say too long as it does make good use of the time and there’s great, great closure to everything. Still, it was a long movie…
