When 10-year-old Tadashi Ino (Ryunosuke Kamiki) stumbles into a spirit war, it's up to him to free the spirit world from the forces of repression in director Takashi Miike's genre-bending fantasy tale. Populated by mod villains, scrap-metal robot monsters and goblins from Japanese folklore, this children's adventure yarn marks a departure from the gory action flicks that have become Miike's stock in trade.
This was a great movie that far exceeded my expectations. Very kiddy, cutesy and has its moments of cheesiness but it's great. It kind of reminded me of crap along the lines of Narnia or whatever garbage we get here, but alot way more awesomer (and even that's an understatement). Definitely one of Miike's better films. I would have enjoyed this alot more if I wouldn't have had to watch it alone.

I was wondering how Miike was going to pull a film like this off and of course, I was more than impressed. He somehow found a way to maintain all of his trademark themes and images and at the same time still be fresh. This is a children's movie for adults and that element makes that much creepier. But The Great Yokai War was still another engrossing and brilliant work from one the current masters of cinema!!!

Finally a Takashi Miike Film that I love .Ok this is great and a lot of fun great production values the English dubbing wasn't bad but always go for subtitles when it is offered it just seems to give it a more authentic feel to watch a film in its original language. I'm no purist I will do both and the English dub is fine for this film. This is a fantasy were a 10 year old gets picked by the local sprit to be the protector of the world and the wielder of the magic sword that will let him do that. This is maybe a little bit much for the youngest viewers but I really didn't see anything to objectionable(well it did kinda look like an acid trip but other then that or maybe it was a child dream/nightmare that I had with western monsters in it like wolfman Frankenstein Dracula the good ole boys of my youth I had that this reminded me of anyway) maybe 10 and up. This is really a fun movie you can watch with your children that they will enjoy also so please do rent this if you get the chance. Thank you for your time and I hoped this helped
