After taking a job in the Big Apple as assistant to powerful fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep, in an Oscar-nominated role), small-town girl Andrea Sachs (Anne Hathaway) is thrilled -- at first. But the magic soon wears off, leaving Andrea feeling battered and used -- and wondering whether working for the boss from hell will pay off. Helmed by David Frankel, this adaptation of Lauren Weisberger's best-seller also stars Stanley Tucci.
I was determined not to like this movie, but it turned out okay, but just barely. Anne Hathaway was alright as the over-worked, underpaid, under-appreciated executive assistant in the high end fashion world. Her merciless boss, played perfectly by Meryl Streep, goes a bit overboard in the stoic, devilish, heartless role, but it plays out well. These types of light comedies are predictable, but entertaining. I found this one particularly entertaining because of the stylish fashions and accessories. The plot itself, however, was a bit weak with no real surprises: Small town girl gets big town job. Job is worse than expected. Small town girl adjusts and meets big town guy to the chagrin of her small town friends. Small town girl becomes big town girl. Then small town girl question her big town lifestyle. This one follows that formula and is definitely a chick flick.

Although not typically my thing, I will admit, this was a pretty good movie. I know absolutely nothing about fashion or the fashion industry (I still don't know what prada is), but found you don't have to be into that to appreciate this movie. The reason being, it is more about choices in life rather and character development than fashion. The characters are all endearing in their own way; even the bad ones have some soft underbelly of goodness to them. But, remarkably, it's never sappy (although it comes close at the very end). You do feel for the main character as she stumbles into big city industry with all the wisdom of a new born baby. In fact, you feel for most of the characters. At times the movie seems larger than life and takes on a fairy tale quality but the chick flick line is never crossed which I greatly appreciate. There is humor here. It is branded as a comedy after all, but it's never over the top stuff. Typically it's a subtle, sophisticated humor that mirrors the industry glamorized throughout the movie. It's the sort of humor that gives a movie tone and color rather than smack you in the face with a fish if you know what I mean. And the acting. Primarly done by Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep, the acting is absolutely top notch.

ireviewnetflix.com rating: ** Not as good as I thought it was going to be. Everyone in the gay community was raving about this movie. Yet another reason why I have nothing in common with the community. The characters were weak, the story was weak, and I just don't care about fashion or the fashion industry which is another reason why I think I didn't like the movie. There were a few good moments, but overall this movie is just as empty and vapid as the fashion industry. I did, however, really enjoy Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt's characters.
