The Bucket List

When corporate mogul Edward Cole (Jack Nicholson) and mechanic Carter Chambers (Morgan Freeman) wind up in the same hospital room, the two terminally ill men bust out of the cancer ward with a plan to experience life to the fullest before they kick the bucket. In a race against the reaper, the new friends hit the tables in Monte Carlo, down obscene amounts of caviar and tear up the road in supercharged cars. Rob Reiner directs this comic caper.

What a tragedy. I can't believe the director of one of my favorite films of all time, "The Princess Bride," has degenerated into the type of person that makes insulting schmaltz such as this. It's not that I don't agree with the sentiment -- I'm a firm believer of living each day as if it were your last. After all, for all of us, "tomorrow" is a wish...a promise. But a solid ideology does not make a solid movie. In this case, it makes a rancid one. Nicholson looks as bored as I've ever seen him -- and who could blame him? He probably just got back from being with two hot 20-somethings, and has to wake up to film scenes where he is relegated to "sick and dying grouch"; the disgust on his face is palpable. Nothing happens that is interesting or surprising, and only a movie like this could take two of the best actors around and make their world tour seem tedious. There are no less than 40 voiceovers from Mr. Freeman, whose wonderful speaking voice still can't save the 3rd-grade-level fortune cookie lectures from making you want to jump through a plate-glass window. I can only recommend this drivel to someone who is actually on their death-bed; but then again, their time is probably best served by actually enjoying their last days, rather than watching a dull sermon on why they should be doing just that. During the film, the Nicholson character proclaims, "Have you ever read 'The Divine Comedy'? It's about Dante's descent into hell." I haven't read "The Divine Comedy," but after seeing "The Bucket List," I know all I need to know about that descent.

Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman are accomplished, talented actors. This movie displays their talent to its fullest. Lesser actors would not have been able to portray the story line of "The Bucket List" with their intensity, understated emotion and humor. "The Bucket List" could have been an overly sentimental film. It is emotional; but it is also funny; it touches our "hot buttons" including our fear of dealing with death and dying. It tells a story of how two men handle the face their mortality and evaluate their lives with a perspective that is compassionate and humorous. The characters find themselves together in a cancer ward and decide to live their last few months by doing things they might have dreamed of but never did. The characters are believable. They don't pull any punches as they list the items they want to accomplish before they "kick the bucket." As they become friends, each man learns from the other. Despite their different lives, each one teaches the other about what is important and valuable in our lives. Jack Nicholson displays his trademark sardonic sense of humor which he perfected in "As Good as it Gets." Morgan Freeman is compassionate with a strong sense of family values and his sonorous voice fills the theater and sets the tone for the movie. The story line is intriguing and moves quickly; the characters have a sense of humor and leave the audience alternating between laughing and crying. One of the best movies of 2007 by two accomplished actors. It is not to be missed by anyone who appreciates a great movie.

I'm so pleased that I have gotten to watch so many movies over the years from two of the best actors we have seen in our lifetime. Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson are the cream of the crop in American movies. This movie was special in so many ways. Yes there's an important message here, live life to the fullest, but it is so much more. Emotional, funny, sad, endearing, just plain great. Two men who had never met before both are thrown a deadly curve from life. Both are from two different paths in life, but are united by their illness'. Maybe, I'm a little sappy on this one. Nevertheless, every now and again you watch a movie that touches you in such a positive way that you can't help but look inward and say to youeself, "What gives me joy, and how much joy have I given to others". This movie is WELL WORTH A WATCH!

This is a decent movie. I could watch Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson do pretty much anything and be entertained. It does get bogged down in sentimentality at times, but that is to be expected. Overall it wasn't a bad movie, but not one of my favorites.

THE BUCKET LIST gets three stars from me solely on the wattage of its superstar co-stars. The plot itself is painfully slow to get past first gear, and even when it does it is superficial and predictable. This could have been much better, I think, and should have been with two of my favorite actors. Good for one watch only, this one will not be a treasured part of my private stash.

Bravo, Well done, Its a very moving heartfelt flim Fine acting, writing.Edward Cole & Carter Chambers were 2 strangers brought together by illness (cancer) & Ed Coles hospital policy of 2 beds to a room no exceptions lol(he owned the hospital). They decided to live life to the fullest, embrace death rather then complain & say why me. Gee with the negatives reviews makes u wonder if we all seen the same movie LoL

This movie brought tears to my eyes. It was wonderfully performed by the one and only Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. The story is about two men, Edward, a rich businessman, and Carter, a mechanic. Both men have cancer and are roommates in the hospital. Thinking they will die, they go on a trip around the world trying to fulfill Carter's (Freeman) bucket list: A list of things to do before you kick the bucket (aka die). Throughout the movie, the men deal with their fears, families and foster a great friendship. The movie has a great message and a good story. It is honestly a fantastic movie to see.

Interesting that the professional critics are so cynical on this feel good mediation on living well and dying well. With all the euthanasia controversy, it is nice to view a story where people are not seeking power over life and death, once again trying to make such things something to be bought or sold. Whether rich or poor, weak or powerful, we must all face the truth of our lives and our deaths, so why not celebrate both and come to terms with both? Freeman and Nicholson are as good as I have seen them both throughout their incredible careers--I just sat back and let their top notch and professional performances wash over me--if I was a mentor to young actors I would point to both actors as models of how to do it right! Rob Reiner has long been a favorite of mine and has long been able to manipulate my heart strings--so be it!! "I laughed, I cried, I was moved, Bob!"-Larry the Cucumber. 6/19/08

This is far from my typical choice in movies...I surprised quite a few people by saying that I wanted to watch this one. And, in all honesty, about 10 minutes into it I was ready to hate it. I plugged along and found a pretty decent movie. There were laugh-out-loud moments and even a tear or two. It's very rare that a movie moves me as much as this one did. The story is well-written and superbly acted. Nicholson and Freeman are a pair made in Heaven! Their chemistry made this movie. I think if anyone else had played the leads, I wouldn't be giving this movie praise. We should all be so lucky to find a friendship like that of Edward (Nicholson) and Carter (Freeman)... 4 stars. 4 July 2008

A bit too sweet and syrupy, and tries a little too hard to tug the heartstrings, but then again how can you knock something with its heart in the right place. And then there are the electric performances of Nicholson and Freeman that are truly something to behold. Forget the script, plot, direction and all that stuff... just watch it for the wonderful chemistry generated by the two old veterans in their leading roles.

Twenty minutes into the movie I start crying. This movie pulls no punches. It shows you what people who are going through surgery and cancer treatment really go through. Rob Reiner did a superb job of directing. Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman are so talented, so multi-faceted, that even with the difficult topic their talent shines through. I have to commend all of the people involved because they could have made this movie so syrupy-sweet and sappy that the audience would have been retching. Instead, they showed the reality of retching and made me cry. They also tempered it with humor. There’s only so much reality that an audience wants to see in regards to dealing with cancer. I’m not referring to those who are being forced to deal with it – I am referring to audience’s looking for entertainment and in this case also caring about the characters. Maybe it’s that I have a friend going through chemo. Maybe it’s that my husband died in 2006 from cancer. But this movie touched me in untold and untapped ways. It stretched me. That’s a lot for a movie. So what is “The Bucket List?” A bucket list is a list of things you want to do before you “kick the bucket.” (A sad commentary about humanity is that people make these lists when they are preparing to die, instead of when they are living.) Edward Cole (Nicholson) is an entrepreneur of hospitals. You know, one of those CEOs who care more for the bottom dollar than for people. Carter Chambers (Freeman) is a mechanic who always wanted to be a history professor. They are definitely strange bedfellows, two completely different types of people. But they have their cancer and impending deaths in common. So they decide to live the rest of their lives to the fullest, trying to beat the devil to the door. None of us live forever, but the question is whether we really live before we die. This is a movie that will touch and move you AND make you laugh! Hard mix to beat!(6/12/08)
