When a CIA sting in Berlin turns murderously wrong, everyone suspects it's the handiwork of Jason Bourne (Matt Damon). As the CIA hunts for their lost ex-killer Bourne, Bourne himself is pursued by a ruthless cartel bent on framing him up -- and leaving him dead. Franka Potente returns as Marie Helena Kreutz alongside Joan Allen as Agent Helen Landy.
I watched THE BOURNE SUPREMACY in preparation for the release of THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM on DVD. This sequel picks up a couple of years after the first left off, with Jason Bourne still suffering from amnesia. Soon enough, he is drawn back into his old profession as a hired assassin in ways that are predictable, even though I'm not going to spoil it for you. Joan Allen and Brian Cox are Bourne's chief antagonists, although there is a Russian assassin who becomes a more physical nemesis. The action is fast and the plot rockets along after a beginning that is just a little slow. Matt Damon's character is as resourceful and clever as he was in the first movie, and he manages to wrap most things up in a tidy package by the end of the movie. If you liked the first, you'll like the second. Now, bring on the third.

The second installment of the Bourne trilogy is slightly weaker than the first. The plot is less developed and it is more rooted in the action genre than the slightly more clever first film. The action sequences are significantly beefed up and the series feels a little more Hollywood than it previously did. The story is still good, better than standard action fare, but begins to show how the studios begin to Hollywood-ize popular films, begin to subject a successful film to their outdated notions of what sells and passes as quality filmmaking. Dont get me wrong, the film is still solid, great camera work, decent writing, decent acting, the second installment is just beginning to show signs of wear and tear on an intriguing character and series.

I'm not sure I can say much about this movie or series beyond what's already been written hundreds of times. But my personal experience is that these Bourne movies are a smart mix of action and political espionage. It's rare for movies to play this mix so well and Matt Damon is perfect in this role. I think I preferred the first movie to this one as there were a few moments of confusion during this sequel for me. But otherwise, yeah, it's not really my favorite genre, but when a movie is done this well you have to give credit where it's due.

I was unsure of this film when I realized that Franka Potente's character would be eventually removed from this sequel--she was what grounded and made the first film more interesting for me. But this film uses her absence well and deepens the Bourne character even more. She becomes his conscience. Still full of the same twists and turns and incredible car chase scenes, Supremacy does deliver--I was not as satisfied with it as Identity but this was still very tight and taunt until the end. Joan Allen was particularly good in this and looks to turn up in the next installment--I look forward to that--Allen is an incredible and seamlessly professional actress. Matt Damon does very well again in a role that could be lost in all the action. A worthy sequel with great Special Features!
