Still reeling from the death of his wife, Los Angeles detective Tom Ludlow (Keanu Reeves) is devastated when he's named as a suspect in the murder of his partner (Terry Crews). With the help of a young homicide detective (Chris Evans), Ludlow struggles to clear his name. His boss (Forest Whitaker), meanwhile, tries to protect him from a tough Internal Affairs investigator (Hugh Laurie) who's determined to put Ludlow behind bars.
Tries to be a hard-hitting action movie but falls a little short and tries to be a twisty conspiracy thriller but falls woefully short with too many clues handed out freely (except to the lead who can't seem to figure it out). I'm okay with a tough-guy cop Keanu but he's no Dirty Harry. Maybe I was expecting too much, on the other hand it was a gritty and entertaining shoot-em-up for guys. 9/08

It was like watching an extended version of my favorite TV show The Shield. Reeves and Whitaker really do good work in their roles, as a group of "special" unit cops in LA. I have to say that Cedric the Entertainer's role was priceless. I loved the comic relief he brought to the screen. Basically, Whitaker is the captain of an elite group of cops who don't always follow the letter of the law to bring in the bad guys. Reeves character becomes more of a problem than he's worth and things go down hill for him quickly. A lot of good action and violence blend together with a pretty good storyline. It didn't really surprise me with the twist throughout, but it did entertain me. 4 solid stars for this well made action/thriller. 10/27/08

My husband wanted to see this - not my genre, and Keanu Reeves is not a fav actor. This is Hollywood's version of corrupt cops in L.A. You don't know who the bad guys are from the good cops or the corrupt cops. The beginning is off - the actors, surprisingly including Forest Whitaker, seemed to be reading their lines. I kept thinking, "this isn't real." Then it picked up a bit and was okay. Wasn't a very original plot. You've probably seen it all before. Note: lots of close-range shootings and course language throughout. 107 minutes? Wow, it seemed much longer.

The ending of STREET KINGS kept me from rating it higher, because I really liked it until then. No, it's nothing you haven't seen before, but the casting was good and the action and gunplay hit all the right notes. I even discovered something about myself. It is possible for Keanu Reeves to play a character that I like. He even seemed to be acting in this one. Forest Whitaker and Hugh Laurie are also great as two sides of the same political coin. But, what did I hate about the ending? Too drawn-out, for one. Too obvious for another. You would have to have lived with your head in the sand for the past four or five decades not to see it coming. Maybe the "whodunnit" wasn't the point of this movie anyway. Worth a watch, particularly for fans of James Ellroy. [09-20-08]

This is an exciting action cop drama with plenty of graphic violence, car chases and shootouts just like you would expect. It was kind of predictable but I would rather have that than a story that doesn't make any sense, which is what I've been seeing a lot of lately. Don't look for romance or anything heartwarming, unless it warms your heart to see bad guys get blown away. There is plenty of that, done in a non-sensitive tasteless way that works fine for me, at least in this case. That's what good action flicks are all about. There's no need for excuses. The stereotypical cops are to be expected, we know all cops are not corrupt. Hey it's a movie. I know some people have a problem with Keanu Reeves' acting but if you can stand him at all give him a pass, cause he wasn't that bad. Forest Whitaker gave his usual top notch performance. I was entertained and got to escape from myself for awhile. That was well worth the ticket price. In my opinion this is the best cop movie since Training Day and I highly recommend it.
