Displaying his trademark dry humor and deadpan delivery, stand-up comedian Steven Wright delights a live audience in Toronto with his provocative one-line zingers. Wright unleashes a torrent of droll observations on the absurdity of modern life, from baby monitors as wiretaps to his addiction to placebos. This concert performance is a rare treat for fans of the Grammy-nominated and Oscar-winning funnyman.
I saw this via the Video On Demand feature. So, the three sections (stand up, civil war avant garde film, and old stand up clip) are concatenated together. The modern stand-up section is fine. Nothing wonderful, but enjoyable. The civil war film becomes tedious. However, the final section, the 2 minute clip of an old stand-up routine is really interesting. Worth jumping to the last 3 minutes. It is amazing how much better Wright was in his prime. If you choose to watch this, you should definitely watch this On Demand and jump to the last three minutes.

The stand-up portion of this DVD (the first 42 minutes) is classic Steven Wright. Funny statements that come out of nowhere. He is one of the few comedians that can make me laugh out loud. Even the couple of songs he did were funny. But the last 30 minutes, the short "One Solider" was just awful. His comedy does not translate into a movie. It was a painful thing to watch. The first 42 minutes are 4 stars, the last 30 just 1 star.

I like Steven Wright, but I've heard most of these jokes on his CD, and the short movie One Solider that followed wasn't appealing. His standup routine was good, I enjoyed it, but having listened to his CDs "I Have a Pony" and "I Still Have A Pony" many times, I was hoping for something new.

First, the stand-up portion is only about 40 minutes. Second, while there are some funny bits, overall it was not worth even investing 40 minutes. I still consider myself a Steven Wright fan as I appreciate his very dry humor, but he doesn't really put it together in this routine. Recommend only for die-hard Wright fans. 5/08

Steven Wright has one of the most unusual styles out there. His one liners are funny and at times thought provoking... mostly you're wondering how in the heck did he think it up! If you're a fan you will really like the stand up segment of this DVD. However, the stand up is only 42 minutes and the rest is a black and white movie short about a Civil War soldier musing about life... way to boring for me. My rating would have been at least 4 stars for the stand up, but the movie short was a waste of time. 3 stars 8/24/08 IW

Steven Wright has always been able to make me laugh, and in WHEN THE LEAVES BLOW AWAY he is as deadpan funny as ever. At least, for about half its running length. The standup portion of this DVD is pure gold, but the student movie part is more than a little leaden. Stop watching at about the 40-minute mark. [08-11-08]
