Silip: Daughters Of Eve

In this explicitly erotic film from the Philippines, two sisters express their sexuality in very different ways. Rejecting the teachings of their repressive society, Selda (Sarsi Emmanuelle) sleeps with any man she wants, while Tonya (Maria Isabel Lopez) stays chaste. But both lust after town stud Simon (Mark Joseph), who's sleeping with Maria (Myrna Manibog), and it's only a matter of time before long-simmering passions boil over.

“Silip: Daughters of Eve” has a release date of 1985 but, in reality, it’s just dated. It looks and feels much older. The film wasn’t cleaned up before transfer but that doesn’t matter. It’s so bad that it’s beyond me why it was transferred it at all. A Philippine film, “Silip” claims to horror and drama but there’s so much gratuitous nudity that it qualifies as sexploitation. That’s actually a good thing because there’s no horror and, although “Silip” has a lot of drama, it’s certainly not much of a drama. At least sexploitation is something. The setting is a seaside native village and the film opens with, in my opinion, a revolting scene of a man, Martin, slaughtering a buffalo while a cluster of children watch. The village is in a state of confusion. There is a chapel but the priest is ill and had to be taken to Manila. The children are being schooled by a Tonya, a young villager, but traditions and old habits die hard. The elder women of the tribe don’t trust her. It seems that, beside being the local buffalo slaughterer, Martin is also the village rake who appears compelled to bed all the village women. Entering into this barely bucolic background comes Zelda, Tonya’s childhood friend. She’s the trouble maker who’d left the village years before. Zelda’s unexpected arrival included a white male American traveling companion to whom she wasn’t married. Add in Zelda and Martin were an item back when and sprinkle a little “Children of the Corn” and it’s obvious this will not end well. This came highly recommended but sometimes recommendations don’t work out. I said this doesn’t end well. I have to say the worst thing about “Silip: Daughters of Eve” is that it began. I hope my opinion’s helpful 12/02/08 ~~~Wingz

This is some excellent Asian Sexploitation, that is more dramatic than campy, more artistic than pornographic, but ultimately trashy and nihilistic. The opening scene shows a water buffalo being slaughtered and butchered for food so sensitive animal lovers and vegans may wish to fast forward or avoid the movie altogether. Those who have a problem with sex and nudity should also avoid it. The three lead actresses are exquisitely titillating and their characters likable as they naturally show off their perfect bodies. The movie is about lust and deceit, religion and guilt, jealousy and rage, puberty and adolescent desire, and murder. But most of all it is about sexual obsession. No one will have an excuse for being shocked if they read this and the other reviews. Pass on it if you are not sure, it may be above your tolerance level. For those who can handle it, go with the excellent subtitles rather than the cheesy dubbing. I highly recommend this for exploitation fans only. You know who you are.
