Samurai Champloo

Director Shinichiro Watanabe mixes a maturity rarely found in anime with a historical Japanese setting and a funky hip-hop soundtrack. Fuu is a spacey waitress at a teahouse where a sword fight breaks out between Mugen, a wild warrior, and Jin, a more composed ronin. In exchange for saving them from execution, Fuu demands that they accompany her on a journey to find "a samurai who smells of sunflowers."

With a non-linear story, (alot of the episodes are just characters wandering into misadventures) you would think Samurai Champloo would be a bust. But Watanabe, fresh off the heels of "Cowboy Bebop," maintains an equally character-driven and action-driven show that manages not to alienate the viewer with some of it's (intentional) plot-rambling. Seriously, the finale is so simple yet so absolutely perfect that you'll walk away from it wanting to re-watch the episodes you thought were irrelevant just to appreciate it more.
