After committing a violent crime, Dale (Teresa Palmer) and Ron (Travis Fimmel) take refuge in an abandoned old house in the country, only to discover it's not empty after all. Stumbling on agoraphobic Andrew (Stephen Moyer), they take him hostage -- possibly their worst mistake. The young criminals soon realize they may not be the ones in charge, as Andrew draws them into his perverse and brutal games in this tense psychological thriller.
Restraint is an interesting movie with a lot of potential. It falls a little short of being a very good movie because it doesn't live up to it's description. It has some very intense moments and is a very well made movie for such a low budget, but I expected more. The concept, two crimminals hide out in a home they don't realize is not abandoned. The home owner is not as he appears and has demons of his own. Twists and turns keep you interested, but the movie is slow in the middle. The alternate ending is much more interesting that then one shown. Not a bad rent and worth a watch if you go in with an open mind. 9/04/08

With its intriguing premise and who's-playing-who mechanics, the Australian made, low-budget very B-movie Restraint is a tight little crime thriller and frankly better than I expected going in (all things considered.) The the acting is mostly acceptable, the plot elements don't require a lot of extravagance and the ending, while perhaps a little vague, was also well-done and... memorable. There are a few implausible events that may cause more critical viewers to roll their eyes from time-to-time but otherwise the suspense is generally effective. If the synopsis has you interested, queue it up; 2.5 stars.

This movie has a lot of potential to be a half way enjoyable film...however...its not. I can't quite put my finger on what exactly it is that makes this film flop but it just seems to fall short of its goal very early in the film. The two criminals are a bit to uneven in character and the hostage is almost to wooden to become attached to. Granted the ending is a nice little twist however as a viewer I was still left with the where is the drive/pull of this film? Would I recommend this film? No definitely not. Skip it you will be glad you did.
