Robert De Niro won the Oscar for his portrayal of self-destructive boxer Jake LaMotta in Martin Scorsese's widely acclaimed biopic. De Niro's powerful performance, combined with Scorsese's black-and-white realism, paints a raw portrait of a tormented soul unable to control his violent outbursts. Cathy Moriarty and Joe Pesci also star. This edition includes commentary from Scorsese, producer Irwin Winkler and LaMotta himself, among others.

Scorsese, though considered to be one of the greatest film directors of all time, may not be one of yours if you don't enjoy watching DeNiro and Pesci speak in a mafioso tough guy language while beating each other up. Personally, I'm not a big fan of that either, but this film is much more than that, and it's very moving. The music and cinematography are stunning, but the characterization is why this film is getting 5 stars. The acting, the directing, the writing, the editing.... everything fits together perfectly. And while there's the whole "You f*ck my wife?" moments, unlike most of Scorsese's films, this one truly is brilliant.

It took me a long time to see Raging Bull, for some reason I didn't think I would like it; maybe it was the black and white thing or the fact that I didn't know anything about LaMotta. I was blown away when I finally saw it however, one of the best acting performances ever by DeNiro, and the overall look and feel of the movie only add to what is basically a very tragic story. The boxing segments are great, and in my opinion Raging Bull is the best boxing movie ever. It isn't uplifting like so many other boxing movies, it is depressing and dark but is a movie that any true fan of film should see.
