Director Gore Verbinksi takes to the high seas to helm the continuing adventures of swashbuckling Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), young Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and headstrong beauty Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley). Once again, the trio returns to the realm of the supernatural as Jack tries to weasel his way out of a blood debt with the ghostly Davey Jones (Bill Nighy), who threatens the wily skipper with eternal damnation if he welshes.
I think "Liked It" is too strong. It's OK. I didn't like it, but it wasn't as fun or interesting as the first movie. The special effects are amazing, but don't carry the movie very far.

I nearly didn't even make it through this one. I loved the first Pirates but didn't rent this mess until recently. Two and a half hours to ultimately resolve nothing. The jokes from the first movie are repeated and the new ones are weak. The CGI effects are impressive but after watching this after 300, not enough to carry the movie. Captain Jack isn't nearly as funny as he was the first time. And, although I realize we're talking about a movie about a haunted pirate ship, the characters are one dimensional and the plot is so ridiculous I was just rolling my eyes through half of it. The first movie had the sensationalism of Cpt Jack and dead Pirates anchored by the very normal characters of Elizabeth and Will. This time it seems like everyone is a characture of the first film. I won't be watching the third installment.

Meh. Definitely not as good as the first. Thank god for subtitles or I'd have no idea what was going on. I think I'm the only person on the planet who doesn't find Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow shtick utterly hilarious.

There was really no reason to make this movie. Its not even worth it to see how the movie ends. The few scenes with Depp by himself are entertaining, but thats where it ends. Do yourself a favor and stay clear of Dead Mans Chest.

Does sequel mean copy? Does it mean that you feel like you are watching the original only with a bit of a different story line? The makers of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest sure seem to think so. I feel like we have already seen this movie the last go around with Pirates. Let's recap, there is a Captain Jack Sparrow who is trying to get something from an otherworldly foe, he enlists the help of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann whose romance is being threatened by a overzealous British higher-up. Which movie am I talking about, the first or the second? Either one and that's what makes the 2 and 1/2 hours feel so long. That being said, Johnny Depp does an outstanding job reprising his role as Captain Jack Sparrow and his amazing ability to become that character really carries this movie. Much more of a humorous movie than the last with some genuine laugh-out-loud moments. The visuals in this movie are absolutely amazing. The Kraken is awesome but Davy Jones is the effect that really steals the show. The special effects team should win an Oscar for this. It is very apparent that this movie is meant to be a transition and it does a good job with that. Nothing new in the way of inappropriate content. Typical for a PG-13 movie. Violence and language carry the rating. Sequels have gotten the bad rap of being worse than the original, but in a few cases (such as Batman Begins and Xmen 2) they can be better than the original. For Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, neither of the above cases are true. This movie is just more of the original with a few running jokes thrown in for a laugh. Good transition movie that could have been so much better.

I was very disappointed in this movie when I saw it in the theatre. The first one was so great that I had high expectations for this one. In addition, it really wasn't a stand-alone movie; it simply prepared us for the 3rd installment. However, I really enjoyed seeing it at home. It hung together much, much better.

I will start out by saying that the special effects were great in this movie, but they were in the first so that is to be expected. I was very disappointed with the story line as it seemed almost "child-like" at times the monologue goofy, mundane and having no point. Johnny Depps character Captain Jack Sparrow in this movie was totally off the wall. I don't know what happened with the character from the first movie to the second but they need to change him back. If and when they come out with another movie for this series I hope that refer back to the first dvd not the second.

The third Pirates film is too long and uncommited to it's material. Johnny Depp is great but the movie is not interested in following through on any of the ideas of the second film. This films reeks of sequelitis (that is repititon and expansiveness masking a light plot).

I watched this on Blu-ray, and I am glad that I chose that format over DVD. The sound and graphical quality was simply amazing. As far as the movie goes, it is too long, the latter part of the movie is a let-down, and the story is hard to follow, for this to be a Disney movie. On the other hand, the fight sequences and action are fun and exciting. The Pirates series reminds me quite a bit of the Indiana Jones movies. The main characters are well-suited for the job, but the supporting actors aren't so much, apart from Bill Nighy. This is still a solid movie, but it has its flaws.

This 2-1/3 hour sequel to The Curse of the Black Pearl is action-packed and filled with superb character interaction between Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Nightley, Bill Nighey, and many more. The costumes and script are brilliant and Depp as Capt. Jack Sparrow is thoroughly intelligent, spirited, and artfully comic in his role as the perpetual scoundrel. Physical humor and action in this movie abound, such as when Depp has been tied to a spit and must extricate himself (in a far more flamboyant fashion than we or he would expect). I've never seen an extended chase and swordfight scene on a runaway mill wheel before. My favorite scene is where Nightley predicts to Depp that he will face a character test where he must show he is a good man at heart, and he will make that choice because he wants to know badly "what it tastes like" (as she engagingly teases him). He gets to find out what it tastes like in the first of several plot twists that resolve the current story line -- and set the stage for the next. (Pirates 3 is due out May 2007.) The second installment of the Pirates trilogy moves at a quicker pace than its predecessor, and takes full advantage of the caricatures of the vast array of characters. There is very little plot and character development, it jumps right into the action. The film isnt quite as effective as the first but it is more involved. The plot develops many new threads that weave throughout the arduously long duration. While the film is more action based and moves more rapidly some of the scenes are drawn out into ridiculously long and overplayed segments that showcase special effects and inane humor instead of plot of characterization. (parallel editing multiple action sequences is always a bit risky and excessive) Similar to the first there isnt a whole lot here, its fun, engaging escapist fare that is simultaneously delightful and disheartening.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is a Jerry Bruckheimer production through and through. The film cost a mint to make and shows it with wonderful, difficult to stage location shoots, elaborate stunts, extensive and varied sets, quality CG, and a couple of explosions thrown in here and there for good measure. Dead Man's Chest is not as good a film as Curse of the Black Pearl, mostly because it is not a complete film; it heavily depends on the upcoming third film to provide resolution to plot lines left dangling. Still unresolved plot aside, this is a pretty darned good thrill ride with awesome action sequences, humor, and excellent performances from all participants, especially the incomparable Johnny Depp. Dead Man's Chest received mixed reviews from the critics, some of whom complained about the film being too busy with too much going on. Personally, after watching Superman do next to nothing earlier in the summer, some good old fashioned action is a breath of fresh air. This is blockbuster season, baby, and I'm paying my 8 bucks (plus an additional $15 for popcorn and Coke) to see swordfights, explosions, costumes, expensive sets and expensive actors. Finally, here is a movie that doesn't try to think too much but that doesn't violate its own logic, a movie you can escape into with characters you can cheer for. I'm satisfied.

This was great and felt more to me like a big event picture than the original. The supernatural elements mixed with the lush cinematography and pirate vibe was a winning formula in my book. I literally sat amazed in my living room watching parts of this movie and thought everything was amazing: sets, costumes, cinematography, action and story. This sequel gave me new appreciation for this swashbuckling franchise and I'm greatly looking forward to the third movie!

This movie was disappointing. After the first installment, I expected this to be an excellent movie. There was too much hype and nothing in this movie to back it up. This is an unfortunate example of the theory that 'the sequel is never as good as the original.' Although not always true, it's very much the case here. The plot...well, it was okay at best. Much of the movie could have been left on the cutting room floor and we'd never have missed it. On the other hand, the special effects were absolutely gorgeous! The acting was top-notch, nothing less than expected.

ireviewnetflix.com rating: ** (Actually 2.5) I don't remember being blown away by the first movie, but I do remember liking it more than this one. I agree with Bill Zwecker of the Chicago Sun-Times who said "This second film is pretty much all thrills, special effects and nonstop action -- but with virtually no cohesive or compelling story line." I just don't have much of an opinion on the movie. It was just kind of there and happeneing. It was just all right. And did it really need two and a half hours. The story, or lack thereof, could have been told in two hours easily. I certainly Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End can deliver more story than this movie did.
