Mystic River

Three childhood friends, Sean (Kevin Bacon), Dave (Tim Robbins) and Jimmy (Sean Penn) are reunited in Boston 25 years later when they are linked together in the murder investigation of Jimmy's daughter. This taut thriller from director Clint Eastwood won two acting Oscars (for Robbins and Penn) and was nominated for several more in its exploration of human behavior when faced with pain just beneath the surface, justified rage and scars that never heal.

The only black character in this movie is Laurence Fishburn. His character's name is Whitey Powers. Is that a joke? Jimmy's goons are named Savage. The Savage brothers. Could we just have called them hired goon one and hired goon two? I mean at the point that you get a little silly in your best picture nominated movie shouldn't you just go the extra mile and see how much the academy will accept. This movie consciously sets out to be an Oscar-winning drama, no doubt about it. It does everything that it should do. And that’s the problem. It tries too hard to accomplish its goal of “heart-wrenching drama.” By adding the several elements of murder, madness, divorce, revenge, and even child abuse, it makes for a wholly unbelievable, sometimes officious movie. It unapologetically demands that the Kleenex come out through its emotionally burdensome story. And for that, it demands too much. I usually have no problem with heavy dramas. But this one didn’t have a point to it besides its insistence on notions of its own sense of self-importance. Surely, this movie is Oscar-worthy. But that says very little of its quality these days.

First off, Clint's movies are just too slo w for me. I also felt that it was trying too hard to get awards. There were a few good scenes, but all in all, it was just ok.

For me, this was a real misfire. Rather than tense, troubling and painful it was more long, boring and dry. I can respect the performances and the technical aspects that went into this production but it didn't resonate in any favorable way for me.

Wow! Having seen this film for the first time I was completely blown away by how good it was. 3 childhood friends are linked together after Penn's daughter is found dead. The pursuit for the killer is hot and fast. However Penn eventually decides to take matters into his own hands...that the law is just not moving fast enough. Robbins questionable life and past have him soon listed as a suspect and Bacon scrambles to find proof. A great movie that will leave you breathless at the end. I can see why people say this one is an all time must see. If you haven't already you should most definitely see it. Top 10 to anyones queue.

Mystic River is a tense tale of parental loss, grief, and determination to exact retribution. Sean Penn acts the hell out of his scenes, chewing through them with gritted teeth and clenched jaw and teary eyes. He is the father who never stops loving his lost child -- or scheming of how (and on whom) to exact revenge. The ensemble cast does a fine job. The setting and milieu ring true. I nearly gave Mystic River five stars but I held back because I don't like to encourage thugs to act thuggishly, even in movies. 4.5 stars.
