After master swordsman Ogami Itto (Tomisaburo Wakayama) rescues a prostitute by volunteering to take her punishment of a brutal beating, an impressed official hires Ogami to assassinate a corrupt governor. But events soon force the wandering warrior to go on the run to escape numerous assassins.
