Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man

A host of popular artists -- including Beth Orton, Nick Cave, Rufus Wainright and the U2 boys -- come together for a memorable evening of music at the Sydney Opera House, paying tribute to legendary songwriter Leonard Cohen. Producing a piece that's part concert film and part documentary, filmmaker Lian Lunson combines footage from the show with archival material and intimate interviews, resulting in a fascinating portrait of a gifted tunesmith.

An interesting musician/concert disc. The 'main' line is a cover/tribute concert to Leonard Cohen's songs. Cut into the performances are interviews with the musicians from the concert, and with Cohen himself. There are also a couple of tracks of Cohen doing his own songs, including the final performance in which he is backed by U2. Though I like several of the performers from the benefit concert, only one or two came close to the impact and interest of Cohen's original recordings. I would say if you are a 'real' Cohen fan, the tribute/cover performances are the low point. The Cohen interviews are very interesting (assuming you do not already know a lot about his life). Cohen was first a poet and novelist, who as a songwriter, really did put poetry to music. It is slow/mellow music with thoughtful lyrics. If you are a fan of several/many of the concert performers, you may actually like this better than the Cohen fans, and may acquire an interest in Leonard himself. If you are not familiar with Leonard Cohen or the 'main' performers (i.e.- Nick Cave, Beth Orton, Rufus Wainwright), you will probably not like this. I give it 3 stars (as a Cohen fan), and 3.5 as an interested musician/observer.
