Susannah Grant (who wrote the Oscar-nominated screenplay for Erin Brockovich) takes her first stab at feature film directing with this emotional drama that follows the rebirth of a young woman (Jennifer Garner) after her fiancé's tragic death. On her painful journey toward healing, she uncovers hidden secrets that make her feel as if she's mourning a stranger. Juliette Lewis and Kevin Smith (the quiet half of the Jay and Silent Bob duo) co-star.

A cute film, but the first and last 10 minutes are where all the magic happens. The middle of the film is just character building (though with good acting) and filler. There are a few surprise twists at the end, and some painfully obvious wrap-ups. There would hardly be any humor in this movie if it wasn't for Kevin Smith. Timothy Olyphant goes through most of the flick with a arrogant Tom Cruise-style smile on him, but I agree that his on-screen chemistry with Garner made the movie. This is definitely no 'Erin Brockovich' but still a good rental with a few heart-warming moments and beautiful scenery.

I thought this movie was very cute. Jennifer Garner is a talented actress. It had many surprises!!

Alternate title: Three Men and a Babe. Premise: Jennifer Garner is the widow who's not technically a widow who finds that having premarital sex with the deceased doesn't get your name in the will, and she has a habit of sleeping with men she hardly knows. She's a baffling character, with incomprehensible motivations. They don't really justify her choice of love interest very well. Plot: sad beginning, lots of funny middle stuff, and "happy" ending. Bottom line: it made me laugh. This movie is worth seeing for Kevin Smith alone. He is a comedic genius.

Okay another mediocre love story to add to the mix. Sweet yes, great no. Is it just me or did Jennifer get her lips done?? She looked awful in this movie, lost WAY to much wait. I kept thinking someones is going to break her. Anyway back to the MOVIE. I don't think that the acting was all that well done. The story line seemed to drag quite a bit in parts. Unlike most romance movies I didn't get the "excited" romance feeling of two people in love. I got the these are two actors playing at being in love. I wouldn't recommend this movie to really anyone.

ireviewnetflix.com rating: *** Not a bad little movie with an interesting premise. It's a cute and quirky story. A man dies and his finance discovers he had a kid with another woman and the woman and the kid show up in town shortly after his funeral. In the meantime, she also falls in love with one of his friend while another friend falls in love with her.

I liked this movie. I never watched Jennifer Garner on Alias, but I can understand why she was a breakout performer on that series. She has a wholesome, girl-next-door quality and cute dimples, and she can really act. I believed her performance as the grief-stricken Gray who gets to know her fiance only after his death. Timothy Olyphant, Juliette Lewis and Sam Jaeger also turn in fine performances. The surprise, to me, was Kevin Smith. Okay, I'm an admitted Kevin Smith fan, but he's always been Silent Bob to me, or else Kevin Smith the Director. Now I'm convinced that the man can actually act. The movie does get a little too Lifetime-ish for me on occasion, and Sam's attempted suicide lacked almost any drama or tension (he's the grieving, heartbroken buddy one minute, pops a handful of sleeping pills, and then he's fully recovered the next). The dead man who is the dramatic center of this story never seems like more than a plot contrivance. But, the story is sweet and sad and hopeful, and the individual performances elevate it above similar soppy dramas.

Very insular kind of humor here, I think. Grief can do strange things to people, but the story is rather hard to believe and didn't get deep enough in exploring this concept for my tastes. Even if I were able to suspend my belief about the story, the quirky characters, and the unneccesary sex scenes, didn't quite make up for the lack of a plot. To me the plot just didn't work. The movie just did not seem that romantic or funny to me and I didn't feel engaged with any of the characters. The little boy made me cringe, as did his mother and her flippant attitude towards everything. None of the characters (the grieving almost widow, the arrogant, sleazy best friend of the deceased, the grieving mother or the long suffering best friend) gained my sympathy. As many reviewers have noted, the best part of the whole movie was the character played by Smith. Although he was not an especially likeable character to me, his silliness and antics made me laugh a lot. Whereas the other characters seemed contrived and overly wrought over things, his character was just himself- stupid funny! Ha! My 3 stars mainly for him.
