I have to admit I was pretty apprehensive about this new Bond, but Daniel Craig was great! There were a couple of times when it seemed like it could have ended sooner, but it was very well done and didn't rely on the gimicks and gadgets as much as the action.

More an assortment of fantastic action sequences than a coherent story. As an adaptation of the first James Bond novel, it starts at the very beginning of 007's career. But it doesn't feel like it fits in its place as the most recent installment of the film franchise. And who seriously believes that Bond, James Bond would be caught dead playing Texas Hold 'Em?

A different Bond for a different generation. Without sacrificing a good story or acting, Casino Royale comes through with shining colors. Daniel Craig is superb as our new (and inexperienced) Bond, his supporting cast equally up to the task. Be on the lookout for references to past Bond films in both the dialogue, scenery, and dress.

Once you endure the tortuously slow opening, after you sort out the confusing leapfrogging from subplot to subplot, you can relax as you watch an almost robot- like Bond, who expends as much time & energy in the movie proving he's not like all those other Bonds as he does chasing the bad guys.

First off--- the opening credits. Where are the nude silhouettes? Where is the sulky singing voice of a female seductress? None were found, instead it was male silhouettes, and a dude singing. Ugh. However, the film got off to a roaring start. The opening action chase sequence was stunning to say the least. I thought wow, this is real deal! Unfortunately, that was the highlight of the film for me. From there, it plugged along rather dryly. The gambling sequences that went on and on didn't grip me in any memorable way, and sort of felt claustrophobic with the setting always being there for most of the movie. There was a cool revival scene from a poison sequence though, and a ball-smacking torture sequnce made me jump off the couch in agony! Otherwise though---Where were the chicks? The guy didn't even score! Not once! Famous line: "Oh James!", not here folks. Now I know what some are saying, this is a different film...harkening back to the early inklings of Bond as he was attaining his status, and all that he is now is beyond that. But I have to say that I am a guy who likes my Bond to be familiar. Female singers, curvy Chicks, nifty gadgets, striking villains and gritty henchmen, and wide-ranging far-flung exotic location action. How about a hint of a one-liner? I consider Bond to be a part of Americana, like Harley Davidson's, baseball, and Superman, and becuase this one isnt, it just aint for me.

Is it the best Bond film ever? Well, it's not the first or second or third or twentieth so I have to say no. But it is by far the best in recent years. This is Bond before he became high class, kinda like a Bourne as he becomes Bond. He's incredibly athletic, acrobatic, clever, egotistical, unsure, and even emotional at times. Bond is much more human here and we connect with him better so that the film transcends from a mere action film to an almost drama level. I'm now anxious to see where the next Bond film picks up.

Some great foot chases made me want to give it 5 stars but a couple parts I never want to see again. The very personal torture of Bond is one. And there was a little too much poker in the movie for me. I guess I should have took the title as a clue of that. When does a government agent need to win a game of cards to defeat terrorism? Not my kind of crime fighting.

Daniel Craig became my favorite Bond in the span of 2 hours. Thats pretty serious considering within the viewing of this movie he overtook 40+ years of actors playing the worlds most famous secret agent. I wont get into the argument of him vs. Sean Connery, but I will say that Craig adds a new wrinkle to Bond that was sorely needed and that, director, Martin Campbell seems to hold a strong understanding of how to get a whole new generation of possible fans hooked on 007! The movie is sparing when it needs to be, intense when it should be, and completely over-the-top when it has every right to be.

Definitely a great start to a new career for Daniel Craig as Bond. Craig plays Bond how Fleming wrote him to be, more of a blunt object and tough fighter. It was good seeing Bond playing Texas Hold'Em instead of baccarat. I think that Craig can make Bond bigger and better than it has been for decades.

I grew up with James Bond but never really found the passion for it that my father’s generation had. Over the years I saw the Bond franchise getting weaker and weaker. And although I was a fan of Pierce Brosnan and thought he’d make an awesome Bond, well, he didn’t. But the hype on this was was very good, *Best Bond Ever* the headline proclaimed. *Daniel Craig’s performance feels grittier and more complex than previous 007s.* was a message that seemed to sum up this new-and-improved version. And it's all true; This movie rocks. The spy plot is old yet new again. And the action is wonderfully choreographed and exciting. Due to the story told (… the very first Bond adventure), viewers will feel like they are getting in on the ground floor of something special. Daniel Craig is intense and fits to a tee the image of Bond. This a super solid movie with twists, exotic women and locales, genuinely creepy/deadly bad guys, high tech spy gear and cool cars. This is exactly what Bond should be.

ireviewnetflix.com rating: ** I will admit that Im not the biggest Bond fan and I havent seen every movie all the way through, but even I can tell that theres something different about this Bond...and I dont like it. This movie was really boring (I dont like poker at all). While Daniel Craig is very hot, the new type of Bond character he plays is not. The story was all right and my favorite scene was where Bond was poisoned and the defibrillator. Either way, Judi Dench is, as always with the recent Bonds, the real star of the movie. God, I love her. Shes so amazing. Everything she touches is gold. The film had its moments, but overall I wasnt impressed.

CASINO ROYALE presents a James Bond only a mother, or someone else's wife, could love. Daniel Craig has either never watched a Bond movie or he consciously made acting choices against stereotype in this one. Here is a rough around the edges, street-tough Bond. A calculating killer. There is still some humor, of course, but the action seems less cartoonish somehow, while still being exhilirating. The early chase sequence through the construction site is worth the price of admission for this one. Shaken or stirred? I agree with Craig: Who gives a damn? Not your father's Bond. Heck, not even my Bond, but I loved this one. [08-26-08]

This is definitely not your familiar 007. He is still suave and debonair with the ladies, but he takes on a new persona of vulnerability making him more real than prior Bond incarnations. Physically, he's rock solid, while emotionally, he's a man with a heart. Even the bad guys are believable and the female lead plays a key role. High-octane adult entertainment recommended over prior Bond movies. FYI: heavy violence in a couple spots so not sure how they avoided an R rating. 8/08

Although I rated this film 4 stars, I am a product of the 60's and there will really never be another James Bond but for Sean Connery, with Pierce Brosnan a close second and Rober Moore not so bad as third. And even though Daniel Craig didn't do it for me, neither did the movie. Don't get me wrong, it was a good action piece, but it didn't seem to have the basic Bond ingredients: gadgets, tongue-in-check comments, beautiful women, and that suave charisma that an 007 needs to have. I also thought the film was too violent (the torture scene in particular). I just didn't think there was much chemistry between any of the characters, and in some cases, the plot seemed disengaged. The best scenes were the chase scene at the beginning and the poisoning scene. The villain didn't seem all that villainous either. Daniel Craig, in order to fulfill this part, needs to be given a script with more of that "Bond" humor. This Bond was too one-dimensional for me.

What do you expect from a Bond film? 1)a Bond that every guy wishes he could be, 2)beautiful women, 3)great action sequences, and 4)lots of high tech toys. I guess 2 out of 4 got this movie my three star rating. There were attractive women (though definitely not in the the top ten of Bond girls) and some good action sequences (primarily in the first half hour). But this Bond is not suave. He fails terribly in several missions, is unsure of himself (and his drink), needs a women to buy him appropriate attire, carries on little of the usual witty rejoinder, and has absolutely no high tech toys. I think the great action sequence at the begining says it all. The guy being chased, does acrobatic stunts - jumping from construction crane to building and through windows, while Bond chases him using the stairs and the elevator. The chase ends when Bond blows up an embassy along with the suspect he was chasing. In my opinion, this was about as close to a Bond movie as the original Casino Royale.

Daniel Craig gives the Bond genre a fresh new outlook. His acting, as well as a well-laid script allows Bond to develop a developed character, even behind his deadpan stare. Mads Mikkelsen, as Le Chifre, was also a stand-out villainous performance, succeeding at maintaining an exceedingly creepy demeanor, with sympathy only for himself. All together, Casion Royale is a fine film that stands up as a better than average action flick, though doesn't have the substance to be a classic.
