Battlestar Galactica: Season 1

This 2003 series, based on the original TV series from 1978-80, was broadcast on the Sci-Fi Channel and instantly won a legion of admiring fans. Join Adama (Edward James Olmos) and Laura (Mary McDonnell) as they lead a ragtag fleet of human survivors (from the destroyed colonies of Kobol) in search of a mythical planet called Earth. But beware, the robot race of Cylons is in hot pursuit … and it seems nothing will stop them!

If you are a fan of great hard SF, and have not seen this show yet, watch it now. If you have seen it, watch it again. Not just the best SF show on TV, but pretty damn well one of the best shows on TV, period. Enjoy!

I ignored the existence of this series for the longest time because Sci-Fi Channel has consistently proven they are incapable of creating quality programming. They shattered that established history with this achievement. This is quite easily one of the best shows on television right now, and most certainly one of the absolute best on basic cable in recent memory. For it is so much more than mindless explosions and shiny objects. At least in this first season (I have yet to reach season 2 and beyond), we find the sort of genuine humanity generally only reserved for the finer dramatic series. Rather, stress and tension and sexuality and humor and so much more are all found in abundance here, leaving the viewer quite shocked at how authentic it all feels. I had exceptionally low expectations from this going in, and when I walked away I was absolutely floored by how much I love this series. Honestly, if you've been holding back because you hate the idea of Starbuck being a woman or because Sci-Fi Channel produces this, or any other of a million reasons, give this a chance because I'm certain you will love this too.

I couldn't imagine a better re-launch of a classic TV sci-fi series than what's been done here with BSG. The camp of the original has been replaced with deep story, dark themes and a real feel for humanity on the edge of extinction. Mature themes of mortality and spirituality are explored in the midst of this dark environment. And the visual FX in this series are a notch above even the best of other TV sci-fi. The space scenes are just as detailed and realistic as the ship interiors lending yet another layer of realism to the superior plots and fantastic acting. I would be tempted to give this season five full stars if not for the occasional slow episode or ill-fitting bit of social commentary. Otherwise, for a first season, this was outstanding.

ireviewnetflix.com rating: **** The mini-series movie was good and the series didn't disappoint either. This show actually got better as it continued on. I was worried as most sci-fi series disappoint me since I've always been a fan of the best, Star Trek, and after watching that most other sci-fi shows are a let down, but Battlestar Galactica has been great so far. Ronald D. Moore has solidified his place in television history as a master of sci-fi.
