Babel

When an American couple (Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett) vacationing in Morocco fall victim to a random act of violence, a series of events unfolds across four countries that demonstrates both the necessity and impossibility of human communication. Director Alejandro González Iñárritu artfully weaves together three seemingly disparate stories of strangers in strange lands in this Oscar nominee for Best Picture and Golden Globe winner for Best Drama.

Interesting movie- pretty stressful and the main theme is the importance of family -whether you're blood related or not. It's grouped with movies like Crash and Syriana, but I don't think it was as good as those movies.

I rarely have movies, but this goes in the pile of 3 or 4 movies I hated. It exploited my emotions, wasted my time, reinforced terrible cultural stereotypes, and wasted incredible acting and directing talent. It created an endless sense of dread that permeated the most idyllic or festive scenes. Why create more fear and dread when there is so much already around us? The movie is about mis-communicating - Babel, get it? Why 2 1/2 hours to tell us this? Why use deaf-mutes to pound this message across to us? Different countries speak different languages and have different cultural signals. But why the backwards Muslim Arabs, why the angry, belligerent Americans, why the disconnected Japanese, why the reckless Mexicans? The actors do a great job, but the characters are one-dimensional. They are intense, yes, but they do not evolve through the movie. Rather, the plot line evolves through the intertwining. It is more like a science experiment, not a work of art. The preview and Oscar nominations do not do this justice: it is much, much worse than you would expect!!

Babel in a nutshell: Great idea, horrible execution. The only story that really touched me was the girl who wanted to be loved. Kikuchis performance was really superb and she hardly uttered a word.

This film is a great reason why Hollywood is so out of touch with todays world. Three stories that are barely intertwined within another is the concept, overall the movie was a huge waste of time. The director decides to show us some unneccessary imagery of pre-teen adolescence masurbation and full-on nidity that does nothing to further the plot or story. And this movie was nominated for best movie?

What a waste of film, time, money and talent, save your Queue space for another. We where very disappointed. It’s one of those movie’s that start at the end and end at the end and leave a lot of unfinished threads. The movie starts in the meddle east, a old man sells his rifle to another close by neighbor for 500 and a sheep. They test out the gun the kids like it and are left with it to protect sheep from the BIG BAD WOLFS. The kids get trigger happy and start shooting at objects to test the guns fire power and distance. They shoot at a bus and a first unknown victim never seen gets hurt, from there it jumps to Brad Pits home with the babysitter, bla bla bla. After that scene it jumps to a chine’s group playing volleyball, more bla bla bla. Then goes on to a short seen with Brad and his wife, come to find out they are in the middle east just to get away…..How lame; the guy had no taste to get away. Then it jumps to another scene, the chine’s girl wants to get laid and never scores. Then on and on and on Booooooo for this movie don’t bother. Just to spoil it for ya, Brads wife survives the gun shot, who knows what happens to the kid that shot her, Brads babysitter get deported the chine’s girl; that never got laid, father is related to the rifle THE END!

I was very disappointed with this film... I thought it was choppy and not interesting. I was bored and thought the acting was par.

Very over rated movie. And please, stop trying to compare this to "Crash". There is no character interaction from different story lines during the movie. I understand what the film was trying to say, I just don't think it did a very good job in getting it across. I thought Brad Pitt did an excellent job and Blanchet's character was instantly unlikeable, which might have been part of the problem. I also thought the story of the Moroccan boys was well done. The story with the kids was okay, but probably the most unbelievable. As far as the Rinko Kikuchi story, it was the weakest of them all, which is too bad, because I think it was supposed to illustrate the problems one can face when trying to communicate with others. It just didn't seem to fit right with the rest of the movie. It isn't a bad film, just not worthy of all the praise it got when released.

Just like "Traffic," just like "Syriana," just like "Crash," just like "21 Grams." Everybody has a story to tell. And this one is no diffrent. Director, Inarritu's fascination with interconnectivity of people is well-documented and appreciated. But Babel is pretentious and heavy-handed at points. It's not a bad movie but you've seen it all before.

As you can tell by the running time, this is a LONG movie. That's not necessarily bad, but I found that some of the storylines in the film were completely unnecessary. The best storyline is with Rinko Kikuchi. She's a Japanese schoolgirl who finds herself isolated in so many ways, because she's deaf. Compared to that, Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett's life in danger in Morrocco and their children's lives in danger just don't seem all that pressing. The other best part of the movie is the storyline of the kids that drive it. Two boys who get a high powered rifle from their father and use it to do the kind of stupid things that boy do. Their story drives the movie and is perhaps the best part. The other particular storylines are not as compelling and in fact are slightly boring.

Kept me interested. Intersecting stories as in the movie Crash. I didn't know what to expect and really enjoyed this. Adriana Barraza gives a great performance.

From the director of "21 Grams", which I didn't care for either. Wow, this movie has way too many "Give me a break!" moments for me. I kept looking for Bad Luck Schleprock. I like the actors in this one but this is not my kind of movie. I'm glad I didn't have this much trouble when I went to Mexico.
