In this third installment of the entertaining anime franchise, cyborg terrorists threaten to shatter the precarious peace of postapocalyptic Olympus, home to the last of humanity. After the guerrillas nearly destroy Briareos in a shootout, Deunan -- his partner and gal pal -- is paired with Tereus, a strapping "bioroid" produced from Briareos' DNA. But complications ensue when Tereus takes a shine to Deunan.
I am not a follower of the series, and relatively new to anime movies having recently seen ninja scroll, paprika and akira. This movie was pretty top notch. Loved the animation quality, and was pretty amazing how the John Woo style (he produced the film) came through loud and clear, doves and all. A little confusing to follow at first, but was a very entertaining movie. If you are a fan or first time watching this genre, you will enjoy it. Definitely for adults, very violent and language.

Stunning is too weak a word for the visual feast presented here. It looks like Pixar has some real competition now. Also by pairing the Best animator of Meca Shinji Aramaki (Robo Tech, Transformers) with one of the best action directors John Woo and with Shirow Masamune's Manga and with him on board also. You get a stunningly well done Anime that is more like a live action movie that will bring a not only those of us that love Anime and animation but also fans of Action movies this truly could mean that Anime has become mainstream. Of course we know the Anime has become more popular as an ever growing film medium. Let's hope this will put it over the top. This really is a 4.5* movie(My Heart and my Eyes said 5 but there was this little voice that said 4)The visuals in the beginning where unbelievable and the rest of the film was Stunning. Although some actions fans might not like the added drama this is meant to reach the widest possible audiences. Also this is not for the youngest viewers it is an action movie and has a lot of violence and gun fights and some adult language. But as always this is just my opinion thank you for your time and I hoped this helped

Incredible 3D CGI animation mixes with good storytelling and characterization to produce a very fine anime in Appleseed:Ex Machina. Even though this film picks up on a lot of Sci-Fi Cop anime themes, Appleseed puts a nice human face on all the non human or sorta human characters. Here and there are some interesting Christian themes that made my ears perk up with the usual meditations on what makes us human--what constitutes the soul. But if you dont care about that so much there are plenty of explosions, martial arts, and gun battles to keep the greatest action junkies interested. All in all, an enjoyable and enertaining experience, if not completely original! 5/11/08

"Appleseed: Ex Machina" is the Hong Kong product of action veteran John Woo and director Shinji Aramaki. Just as important, it a continues the Japanese comic book (Manga) story arc created by Shirow Masamune, who also wrote "Ghost in the Shell." Ex Machina breaks ranks with anime tradition by going completely 3-D CGI with only a minimum of hand rendered assistance. Personally, I think the look of this film is stunning. The story takes place in Olympus, a futuristic city where humans, cyborgs, and bio-engineered humans called "bioroids" live a near utopian existence. The action is built around a paramilitary task force or, more specifically, two members of a taskforce. Deunan ¿Dune¿ Knute (voiced in English by Luci Christian) and Briareos (David Matranga) are both lovers and partners with a long history. Like anything that brings people together to live in harmony, there¿s always someone who will want to tear it down. The taskforce (called E.S.W.A.T.) has been called into action because of a series of seemingly random terrorist attacks. ¿Appleseed: Ex Machina¿ may be a glitzy rush of anime action but, woven into the multi-thread story arks, is enough food for thought to give an adult something to wrap a mind around. It¿s just a story but it asks, What, exactly, makes a human, human? Or sparks inhumanity? And it questions the limit to that most ubiquitous of human emotions ¿ love? I know it sounds trite, but the Dune - Briareos relationship is the force that makes this action adventure saga work. Every time I think I should give the cartoon back to the kid I stumble over something made with wit and reason; something that doesn¿t insult my intelligence as an adult. Something like ¿Appleseed: Ex Machina¿ I hope my opinions are useful ~~~Wingz
