Angel-A

Deep in debt, small-time hoodlum Andre (Jamel Debbouze) decides to end his life on his own terms before his unsavory creditors come a-calling. But as he's poised to dive off a bridge, he meets the mysterious Angel-A (Rie Rasmussen), who seems just as desperate, and the event changes his entire outlook. The two discover that companionship can make even the most difficult life worthwhile in this inspiring film from French director Luc Besson.

It isn't a bad movie, but it isn't very good either. To be completely honest, the best thing about it is the Black & White cinematography...even the "making of" featurette is in B&W. The story seems to be a take on "It's a Wonderful Life," with an angel named Angela (the title makes sense now, doesn't it) trying to help a man who is indebted to some characters who are a bit shady to say the least. Some parts were enjoyable, but Besson should have used this film to say something about the human condition as opposed to trying to make a supernatural (and "deep") romantic comedy.

This is a charming movie that has quite a positive outlook, go and do it attitude. I enjoyed the attitude of the movie and the slow transformation of both characters. Angel-A is helping Andre get his life together. In the end, Andre himself has an influence on Angel-A and the characters struggle to go for what they want. I liked the movie, it was a bit slow though. The cinematography was excellent.

This is a good movie. I think the visual and verbal play between the tall and beautiful blonde ( Rie Rasmussen ) and the short and shabby guy ( Jamel Deddouze ) is great. Shot in black and white in Paris the setting couldn't have been better. Yes this is sappy but i enjoyed it being so its like a feel good movie with great acting and secenery to match this is most certinaly a 4 star movie. I hope this helps you decide to rent this I would if I were you. Oh yea this movie is in french with subtitles so if your not used to that i suggest you try anyway it would be a shame to miss a good movie just because of that!

I love French cinema. You most certainly would never see in a million years an American director/producer casting a one-armed man as the lead, and yet in France they have no problem doing so. Well, it helps of course that Jamel Debbouze is an entertaining presence on screen, arm or not. At any rate, I found this film to be rather odd and interesting, which in my book almost always equates to enjoyable. Modern films in B+W can come off as being a bit gimmicky at times, but this one works well and probably wouldn't have been as good if shot in color. You get the standard French dialog here, of course. You know, quick, witty retorts that only work in French. Rie Rasmussen is an attractive enough woman, but not so much that you ever think of her as being strictly eye candy. Certainly I'd recommend this to all French cinema fans, and probably to most foreign language fans, but most likely not to those that really only enjoy Hollywood fare.
