Despite Othello's brooding and suspicious nature, he doesn't suspect that his friend is the one behind the rumors about his wife's infidelity. Stage and film actor Oliver Parker directed this scaled-back adaptation of Shakespeare's classic tragedy.

Hamlet
Shakespeare's brooding, medieval Dane, Hamlet (Mel Gibson), senses something rotten in the state of Denmark; specifically, he smells a rat behind his royal father's death. Hamlet's mother (Glenn Close) may be complicit in the tragedy, while ill-fated Ophelia (Helena Bonham Carter) is an innocent bystander in love with the young prince. A wonderful supporting cast includes Ian Holm as Polonius and Alan Bates as Claudius. Franco Zeffirelli directs.

A Midsummer Night's Dream

Titus
Anthony Hopkins is a victorious Roman general who returns from battling the Goths with their queen (Jessica Lange) as his prisoner. Director Julie Taymor takes Shakespeare's bloody classic Titus Andronicus and puts it through a phantasmagoric time machine. Highly stylized and thought-provoking, Titus received an Oscar for its brilliant costume design.

Of Love and Shadows
Irene (Jennifer Connelly), a magazine editor who's lived a sheltered existence under the shadow of the Pinochet dictatorship in 1973 Chile, gradually awakens to the political tumult when handsome photographer Francisco (Antonio Banderas) enters her life and opens her eyes to the brutal atrocities being committed by the state. Based on Isabel Allende's novel, this drama also stars Patricia Contreras and Stefania Sandrelli. Betty Kaplan directs.

Human Nature
Talk about bizarre love quadrangles... This one involves a woman (Patricia Arquette) covered with body hair, a behavioral scientist (Tim Robbins) who's trying to teach mice table etiquette, his French laboratory assistant (Miranda Otto) who harbors a secret, and a feral man-creature (Rhys Ifans) who was raised in the wild like an ape. Eccentric doesn't begin to describe this movie -- better get out the tapering shears!

Doctor Zhivago
Based on the novel by Nobel Prize-winning author Boris Pasternak, this brilliant, epic film is about a man (Omar Sharif) and his mistress (Julie Christie) caught up in the danger and drama of the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917. Director David Lean brings the story to scintillating life, while the performances (including a memorable turn by Rod Steiger), production and haunting score are superb. Alec Guinness also stars.

Of Mice And Men
Based on John Steinbeck's 1937 classic tale, this drama tells the story of friends George (Gary Sinise, who also directed) and dim-witted gentle giant Lennie (John Malkovich), who wander the country during the Depression. They find work on a California farm and get closer to realizing their dream of settling down, but it all goes tragically wrong when the boss's wife (Sherilyn Fenn) makes advances.

Bonnie and Clyde
Serial bank robbers, sometime lovers and folkloric heroes, Bonnie Parker (Faye Dunaway) and Clyde Barrow (Warren Beatty) barrel across Depression-ravaged America on a shooting spree that ended in a deathly rain of bullets -- for them. Sexy and stylish, the film, directed by Arthur Penn, shattered the crime film mold, layering comedy onto mayhem and youthful criminality. Gene Wilder makes his first film appearance here.

Deliverance
In this 1970s existential action epic, four suburban friends (Jon Voight, Burt Reynolds, Ronny Cox and Ned Beatty) take a canoeing trip down a Georgia river. But what begins as a lighthearted adventure becomes a voyage into the heart of darkness when redneck locals descend on the foursome and force them to kill or be killed. A masterpiece of grace and power, Deliverance still terrifies and enthralls today.

Ray
This biopic tells the life story of rhythm and blues legend Ray Charles (Jamie Foxx, who won a Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal). Born to a poor family in Albany, Ga., Charles contracted glaucoma at age 6 (which robbed him of his eyesight) and nonetheless went on to become a world-famous pianist and performer. He dealt with racism, romantic letdowns and his own heroin abuse, but managed to triumph over all obstacles. Taylor Hackford directs.

The Road to Guantanamo
Director Michael Winterbottom presents the true story of three British Muslim men, known as "the Tipton Three," who were unjustly arrested and held for more than two years in the U.S. detention camp at Guantanamo Bay. By blending dramatic re-enactments, interviews with the surviving men and archive news footage, Winterbottom's Independent Spirit Award-winning docudrama delivers a chilling and shocking exposé of out-of-control security measures.

The Wedding Date
Kat (Debra Messing) can't stomach the idea of attending her sister's London wedding, where her ex-boyfriend, who had ceremoniously dumped Kat perilously close to the altar, will likely be a guest. But duty calls and she must fly in for the torturous affair, which she decides may be more palatable if she seeks companionship of a different sort … that of a male escort (Dermot Mulroney). Sparks fly as love finds its way in this romantic comedy.

The Closet
It's Melville's "Bartleby the Scrivener" with a twist when Daniel Auteuil (as a milquetoast accountant) is about to get fired from his job for literally being a bore. At the last minute, a neighbor concocts a "new life" for Auteuil as an out-of-the-closet (read: intriguing) homosexual, and suddenly everything changes. Gérard Depardieu co-stars as a homophobic officemate who may be masking a few feelings of his own.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
While the Civil War rages, three men -- a quiet loner (Clint Eastwood), a ruthless hit man (Lee Van Cleef) and a Mexican bandit (Eli Wallach) -- comb the American Southwest in search of a strongbox containing $200,000 in stolen gold. In his third classic spaghetti Western with Eastwood, director Sergio Leone continues to shake up the genre with stylish photography, a hefty dose of cynicism and Ennio Morricone's instantly recognizable score.

Friday Night Lights
Peter Berg directs this gritty but heartwarming tale, based on a book by H.G. Bissinger, that chronicles the efforts of Gary Gaines (Billy Bob Thornton), the coach of a local football team in small-town Odessa, Texas, to propel his squad to the state championships. But the path to glory is paved with racial and economic strife, and the coach must help his players navigate through the maze so they can play like winners.

National Lampoon's Barely Legal
Thanks to a part-time job at a local video store, it's relatively easy for Fred (Tony Denman) to steal adult films for his friends Deacon (Erik von Detten) and Matt (Daniel Farber), who make money by selling copies to their horny high school clients. The Grudge

Humboldt Park
Debra Messing and John Leguizmo head up an all-star cast in this multicultural ensemble comedy that follows a trio of Puerto Rican siblings on their way home to Chicago for a Christmas season family reunion. Directed by Alfredo De Villa, the holiday tale also features performances by Alfred Molina, Luis Guzman, Jay Hernandez, Freddy Rodriguez, Vanessa Ferlito and Melonie Diaz.

Seven Pounds

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
David Fincher directs this adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic tale set in the early 20th century that follows Benjamin Button (Brad Pitt), a man who was born in his 80s and continually grows younger. The story throws linear conventions upside down to explore love, loss and memories from the perspective of a character living under incredibly unique -- and unexpectedly difficult -- circumstances.

The Day the Earth Stood Still
In this updated version of the 1951 classic sci-fi thriller, Keanu Reeves stars as an alien named Klaatu who's sent to Earth to warn the leaders of the world about the consequences of their dangerous ways. Joined by a heavily armed robot companion, Klaatu informs the people of Earth that the constant aggression carried out against one another has raised the ire of an alien species, which is now threatening to exterminate all of mankind.

The Spirit
After rookie Central City cop Denny Colt (Gabriel Macht) is murdered, he's mysteriously reborn as masked superhero the Spirit. Setting out to rid the streets of crime, he finds his archnemesis in the Octopus (Samuel L. Jackson), whose quest for immortality imperils the entire city. Scarlett Johansson, Eva Mendes and Paz Vega co-star in this adaptation of Will Eisner's classic comic by writer-director Frank Miller (Sin City, 300).

Slumdog Millionaire
