Julie Delpy stars in Krzysztof Kieslowski's dark comedy (the middle segment in his "three colors" trilogy) about the price of passion. Polish immigrant Karol Karol (Zbigniew Zamachowski) is humiliated in a public courtroom by his wife (Delpy) during their divorce proceedings. Shamed and brokenhearted, he finds an ally in a fellow countryman. The two concoct a way back to post-Communist Poland, where Karol sets about rebuilding his life.

Red
Krzysztof Kieslowski strikes again with Red, the final film in his "three colors" trilogy. In this meditation on the need for passion and human connection, an accident brings together two very different people -- Valentine (Irene Jacob), a model, and Joseph (Jean-Louis Trintignant), a retired judge. Since love chooses to pair people at random, theirs becomes a fated, deeply improbable, but true romance.

Black Sheep
On a quiet New Zealand ranch, a genetic experiment has gone horribly wrong, transforming a docile flock of sheep into killers hungry for human blood. Those they bite become ravenous were-sheep. Wizards
In a bleak future that's a blend of World War II Europe and Tolkien's Middle-earth, a runty wizard (Bob Holt) must save the world from fascist mutants controlled by his evil twin brother (Steve Gravers). Seems the bad bro likes to toy with enemy armies by projecting films of Adolf Hitler speeches during attacks. Nice! Animator Ralph Bakshi blends everything from swords and sorcery to kung fu and nuclear catastrophe in this bizarre flick.

The Reading Room
This heartwarming drama stars James Earl Jones as a widower who honors his wife's dying wish by opening a reading room in a tough inner-city neighborhood. Affluent suburbanite William Campbell (Jones) is surprised by his wife's request but donates his extensive library to the effort. He soon finds himself faced with many obstacles -- and triumphs -- as he tries to teach illiterate community members to read. Joanna Cassidy and Tim Reid co-star.

Word Wars
Follow four "word nerds" through their fastidious preparations and smaller tournaments that lead to the national championship Scrabble tournament in San Diego in 2002. These men are highly motivated (obsessed, even) and are not above uttering a few four-letter words when the going gets tough. Our favorite: Joel Sherman, a true dork with acid reflux trouble (he constantly quaffs Maalox) and no other discernable job besides playing Scrabble.

After all his pals have become possessed, flesh-eating zombies, the one remaining teen (Bruce Campbell) tries to solve the nightmarish mystery and save his friends. Spider-Man director Sam Raimi uses impressively freaky special effects to make this low-budget horror classic.

Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn
Stranded in a cabin in the woods, Ash (Bruce Campbell) and his girlfriend accidentally invoke a spell that causes the Evil Dead to rise and kill! As a lone man pitted against hordes of walking corpses, can Ash survive until the safety of sunrise? Director Sam Raimi's whip-crack direction and Campbell's comedic skills induce hair-raising fear and gales of laughter.

Army of Darkness
One of the most memorable early works from director Sam Raimi (Spider-Man), Army of Darkness is the third in a trilogy of hilarious sci-fi sword-and-sorcery epics. Bound in human flesh and inked in blood, the ancient Necronomicon, or "Book of the Dead," transports department store clerk Ash (Bruce Campbell) and his 1973 Oldsmobile into England's Dark Ages. There, he faces legions of undead beasts in a battle for his life.

The Field
Richard Harris made a triumphant return to the screen and received an Oscar nomination for this intense portrayal of a peasant who battles wealthy American developers in a fight to retain the rights to a piece of land he's cultivated and cared for all his life.

Alice
Czech director Jan Svankmajer's bizarre adaptation of Lewis Carroll's children's book is considered a classic of surreal cinema. After her stuffed rabbit opens a portal inside her dresser, Alice (Kristyna Kohoutová) crosses over into a warped world of gothic props, puppets and dead animals. Svankmajer gives the Caterpillar, the Mad Hatter and the Cheshire Cat warped makeovers via stop-motion animation and stark cinematography.

The Hobart Shakespeareans
Mel Stuart's documentary follows Rafe Esquith, a passionate educator who inspires his students from Central Los Angeles to achieve the best that life has to offer. Mixing Shakespeare, Mark Twain and mathematics, and touring his young charges around Washington, D.C., and college campuses, the elementary school teacher makes learning exciting. For the finale, actors Ian McKellen and Michael York help the kids stage a production of "Hamlet."

Cypher
Bored with his suburban life, Morgan (Jeremy Northam) enters the world of corporate espionage, spying on rival corporations for Digicorp. It's all very exciting until he realizes he's being used as a pawn in the war between Digicorp and rival Sunways. Femme fatale Rita (Lucy Liu) may be able to help him get out of the situation alive -- if he can convince her to help him. Won the Grand Jury Prize for Fantasy at the 2003 Fantasporo Film Festival.

Jean de Florette / Manon of the Spring
Claude Berri directs this pair of award-winning French dramas. In Jean de Florette, two men (Yves Montand and Daniel Auteuil) scheme to acquire a neighboring farm by preventing a natural spring from flowing, a water source that the new owner, Jean (Gérard Depardieu), needs for his crops. In Manon of the Spring, Jean's grown daughter (Emmanuelle Beart) goes after the two men with a fierce vengeance worthy of her proud and courageous heritage.

Memories
This trilogy of anime tales combines the talent of three of the genre's best: Koji Morimoto, Tensai Okamuro, and Katsuhiro Otomo. "Magnetic Rose" trails the crew of a spacecraft who stumble upon a haunted ship; in "Stink Bomb," a lab worker takes cold medicine only to find out it was a deadly biological weapon; and in "Cannon Fodder," the population of a dismal metropolis exists solely to build a never-ending stream of deadly weapons.

The Way Home
Sang-Woo, a spoiled little South Korean boy, is spending the summer with his mute grandmother who lives up in the mountains. Over the course of the summer, Sang-Woo gets used to his grandmother, whom he used to make fun of, calling her a "retard." He also gets used to the simpler ways of life in the country and learns the importance of love and respect for one's family and elders.

Moonlight Mile
Moonlight Mile is the story of a young man (Jake Gyllenhaal) who's taken in by the mother (Susan Sarandon) and father (Dustin Hoffman) of his recently deceased fiancée, as he's the only living connection to their daughter. Even as they're all still grieving, Gyllenhaal begins to fall in love with a woman (Ellen Pompeo) whose boyfriend has gone missing. But will Gyllenhaal's former in-laws-to-be accept the new relationship?

Day of the Dead
The third chapter in writer-director George Romero's classic zombie film saga finds a group of scientists and soldiers hiding in an underground bunker to escape a world overrun by the flesh-eating undead. The scientists desperately seek a way to control the zombies, while the military just wants to kill as many of them as possible. But infighting between the two groups takes a backseat when the zombies invade the subterranean facility.

Running on the Sun
The Badwater, the most extreme footrace on earth, features a 135-mile course that extends over barren desert, across three mountain ranges and through soaring temperatures of up to 130 degrees Fahrenheit -- with the added perils of flash floods and windstorms along the way. This documentary tracks 13 of the brave participants and runs the full gamut of human emotions with them -- from joy to despair -- as they push the limits of human endurance.

Happy Accidents

Attempting to score alcohol for a party (believing that the babes will follow), the boys' evening quickly dissolves into chaos. Bill Hader ("Saturday Night Live") co-stars.

From Beyond
After inventing a way for creatures from the fourth dimension to come into his own world, Dr. Edward Pretorious (Ted Sorel) suffers a gruesome decapitation at the hands of those he brought "from beyond." But authorities suspect his assistant (Jeffrey Combs) is to blame. Barbara Crampton co-stars as a beautiful psychiatrist brought in to help police solve the case in this classic 1980s thriller based on a short story by H.P. Lovecraft.

Charlotte Gray

Lady Vengeance

The Five Senses
Five lonely urbanites -- each representing one of the senses -- find their lives intersecting as the city of Toronto is unnerved by the disappearance of a 3-year-old girl. Writer-director Jeremy Podeswa fashions an elegantly shot and coolly rendered character study in the style of Canada's most famous art-house auteur, Atom Egoyan. With Mary-Louise Parker (Boys on the Side) and Molly Parker (The Center of the World).

Notes on a Scandal
When pottery instructor Sheba Hart (Cate Blanchett) dives into an illicit affair with one of her students, she creates a sticky situation that spells turmoil for herself and puts a fellow teacher in a tough spot. St. George faculty member Barbara Covett (Judi Dench) connects with the pretty new art teacher, but things get complicated when Sheba divulges her secret. Baxter

Waking Life
Director Richard Linklater's mesmerizing animated film follows a young man (Wiley Wiggins) as he floats in and out of philosophical discussions with a succession of eccentrics and passionate thinkers, all the while uncertain whether he's conscious or dreaming. Thanks to each character's oddball charm, the ethereal conversation is as dynamic as the animation, resulting in an innovative film that is by turns droll, disturbing and provocative.

Brick
This unconventional film noir -- set in the halls of a modern-day high school -- marks a promising debut for writer-director Rian Johnson. Teenage loner Brendan Fry is forced to navigate his school's social network when a secret crush turns up dead and the murderer is anyone's guess. Fearless

Martina Gedeck stars as Martha, whose obsession with precision gourmet cooking extends to discussing recipes with her bewildered therapist (August Zirner) and verbally attacking anyone at the restaurant who attempts to send her food back.

After his girlfriend dumps him, insomniac art student Ben (Sean Biggerstaff) takes a supermarket night-shift job and deals with his boredom by pretending he can stop time --a tactic that reveals life's hidden beauty and draws him to the intriguing checkout girl (Emilia Fox). F for Fake
In this free-form documentary from the one and only Orson Welles, the famed storyteller zigzags through a sardonic, fanciful tale of how art manages to amaze and fool us, often simultaneously. With faux determination, Welles examines the charismatic artist Elmyr de Hory, who makes pretty good money creating bogus Picassos and Matisses. Also fascinating is Welles's own deception and a peek into the life of the very private man.

Sunshine
With Earth's life source -- the sun -- dying out 50 years in the future, it seems the planet's days may be numbered in this sci-fi thriller starring Cillian Murphy and Michelle Yeoh.
